2017 Legislative Session - Snoozer or Game Changer? (#108744)

Immediately following the updates and questions, Lee will teach a 1-hour course for CE credit (#108744) - 2017 Legislative Session - Snoozer or Game Changer?

If several high profile political issues hadn't occurred at the Capitol, one might not have known that the Legislature actually met last spring. But meet it did and important bills affecting health insurance and health care for Texans were passed. Some other positive bills made progress but unfortunately fell by the wayside before it was all over.

Learn about those big issues and catch up on what TAHU's crack legislative team was able to accomplish during the 85th regular session of the Texas Legislature. Was it a snoozer or a game changer?

Lee Manross, the registered lobbyist for TAHU, began his professional insurance association activities in 1990, recruited as a member of Austin AHU. He served as the AAHU Legislative Chair for eight years, was a member of the TAHU Legislative Council from 1992 to 1998, and also was the NAHU Region IV Legislative Chair from 1993 to 1994.

Lee's insurance background stretches back to the 1980s when he opened his own scratch P&C agency and later expanded to included life and health insurance, among other employee benefit programs. He subsequently developed the benefits departments for two independent agencies in Austin before becoming the TAHU Lobbyist in 2003.

Jessica Watts serves as the Texas compliance consultant for the Employee Benefits practice of Frost Insurance, regularly consulting on health care reform compliance for clients all across Texas. Previously, she was Vice President, Benefits Compliance at NFP Corp., where she was a contributing author of the bi-weekly Compliance Corner newsletter.

Jessica serves as a member of the Legislative Council for NAHU, co-chairs the Compliance Corner working group, and volunteers as the TAHU Director of State Legislative Affairs. She has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Financial Services and Planning from Baylor University and a Master of Science from Tarleton State University. She also holds a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) designation and a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation.
